Handing Over of Iindonesia's Cash Assistance for Nargis Victims

On 31 August 2009, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Union of Myanmar His Excellency Mr. Sebastianus Sumarsono has symbolically hand over cash assistance amounted to US $ 1,000,000 (one million US Dollars) from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, to the Government of the Union of Myanmar represented by Chairman of the Tripartite Core Group and Chairman of the Civil Service Selection and Training Board (CSSTB) His Excellency U Kyaw Thu, at the CSSTB Office in Nay Pyi Taw. Present to witness the occasion, representatives from ASEAN and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

The assistance is a realization of a prior commitment made by the President of the Republic of Indonesia right after Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar in May 2008. It was long overdue because of a banking problem, but as a result of tireless effort and coordination among related ministries of the Government of Indonesia, the fund has finally delivered to its rightful recipient.

As it was agreed between the two governments, the fund will be used for assisting the recovery efforts in education and health sector in the Delta, with the allocation of 75% and 25%. The two sectors happen to be the main priorities of concern of both governments.
