The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo in cooperation with the Ministry of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) has facilitated the participation of five state-owned Indonesian Strategic Industries at Japan's largest defense industry exhibition and conference, the 2nd Maritime / Air Systems & Technologies (MAST) Asia 2017 from 12-14 June 2017 at Makuhari Messe, Chiba Prefecture. MAST Asia was first held in Japan in 2015 with the opening of Japan defense industry cooperation opportunities with friendly nations.
Present on the occasion are five companies of the Indonesian defense industry, among others, PT. Dirgantara Indonesia (Persero), PT. Pindad (Persero), PT. PAL Indonesia (Persero), PT. Dahana (Persero), and PT. Len Industri (Persero). The exhibitor delegation was led by the Ministry of SOEs and supported by the presence of representatives from the Directorate General of Defense Potential (Pothan) of the Ministry of Defense in the series of visitors' programs.
Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Ir. Arifin Tasrif, during his visit to the Pavilion Indonesia, highlighted the main objectives of Indonesia's participation in the exhibition held every two years, among others, to demonstrate the ability of Indonesia in terms of design capacity, development and production of the Main Armament System Equipment (Alutsista) for National defense needs. Another expected outcome is to improve networking between defense industries with other regional and global players that can lead to defense industry cooperation, advancing national technology, and open up jobs for Indonesia's defense industry sector in the future. Indonesia's presence is also aimed at promoting the next implementation of The 8th Indo Defense 2018 Expo & Forum on 7-10 November 2018 at the Jakarta International Expo in Kemayoran, Jakarta.
The major companies of the global defense industry present in MAST Asia 2017 includes Lockheed Martin, Bell Helicopter, Thales, GE, FLIR and Thyseenkrupp. Also present are Japanese defense industry companies such as ShinMaywa, Kawasaki, NEC, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Toyo Corp. And Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. In addition to Indonesia, there is also country booths for Australia, Italy, France and representatives of Indian companies. MAST Asia 2017 is fully supported by the Japanese government, including Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA), Ministry of Defense (MOD), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
