Speech by DCM on the Occasion of the Cultural Performance and Fashion Show, Rome, 29 September 2011

Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
First of all, I would like to express my most sincere appreciation to all of you for your kind presence in this special occasion. Your attendance here reflects your genuine acceptance and profound enthusiasm to the cordial relations with Indonesia.
On the occasion of commemoration of the 66th Anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with Yayasan Akar Wangi, and the Italia-Indonesia Association for Friendship and Cooperation, has great pleasure to present to you a special cultural performance and fashion show entitled "Hidden Dreams”.
In just a moment we will indulge you with an array of unique, exclusive, and memorable presentation of tenun as well as batik culture and fashion by two Indonesian famous designers, Oscar Lawalata and Auguste Soesastro. Through this event, you will also enjoy dance performances by Maestro Didik Nini Thowok, and two other Indonesian professional dancers, Kris Soewardjo and Fardian Khalil, as well as Indonesian jazz music by Murni and group.
The event demonstrates a small portion of Indonesian cultural diversity and gives an overview of the Indonesian fashion and culture. It brilliantly depicts our unique culture which originated from a broad range of distinct ethnic groups, languages, and religious groups, who inhabit the Indonesian Archipelago consisting of more than 17.000 islands.
The richness and diversity of our culture are reflected under our national motto, “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” which literally means “many, yet one”. Tonight, through the “Hidden Dreams”, you may see the real beauty of Indonesia’s fashion and culture.
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This event could be possible due the existing excellent bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Italy since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1951. Having enjoyed the outstanding bilateral relations, the two countries have made constantly increasing trade volumes from year to year and last year stood at US$ 3,4 billion. The value of Italian investment in Indonesia also increases significantly and ranks number 6 among the European Union countries.
Since Indonesia’s economic growth is 6,1% in 2010 and predicted to be 6,3% in 2011, Indonesia has been one of the most interesting countries for investment. For business entities in Italy, this means greater opportunities to conduct business and investment in various sectors in Indonesia, as well as visiting and enjoying Indonesia’s well known tourist resorts.
It is fair to say that we take pride of ourselves that Indonesia now, along with Italy, is a member of G20. Thanks to consistent reforms which brought steady economic growth for the last several years, we were able to cushion the recent global economic crises. Indonesia has transformed from an authoritarian to a full-fledged democratic country, the third largest in the world, and living proof of a successful peaceful democratic transition. Indonesia is also home to the largest Muslim community in the world, projecting the true face of moderate Islam, which is peaceful, tolerant, and show great respect to other faiths and religions. Indonesia is a proven model of inter-religious harmony, democracy and modernity.
The presentation of Hidden Dreams tonight is aimed at making the peoples of the two countries feel closer especially by understanding better Indonesia which is well known by its diversity in tradition, ethnicity, and culture.
In conclusion, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Yayasan Akar Wangi, the Italia-Indonesia Association for Friendship and Cooperation for their excellent cooperation in organizing this event. My sincere thanks also go to all sponsors, collaborators, and patronages, namely AltaRoma and Comune di Roma respectively, whom I owe my deepest gratitude and appreciation for their invaluable contribution and support to make this event really successful.
Thank you very much and enjoy the Hidden Dreams.
Grazie mille
