DINNER RECEPTION TO MARK THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
OF THE DIPLOMATIC RELATION BETWEEN
REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA AND THE DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF KOREA
RESIDENCE, PYONGYANG, 5 MAY 2014
Excellency Mr. Ri Kit Song, Vice
Minister of Foreign Affairs;
Excellency Mr. So Ho Won, Vice
Chairman of CCRFC/
Chairman of Korea-Indonesia
Dear Guests and Friends;
Welcome to our residence.
Susi and I are very pleased to have the opportunity to host this dinner
reception to mark the 50th Anniversary this year of the establishment of the
diplomatic relations between the Republic of Indonesia (RI) and the Democratic
People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Susi and I felt particularly fortunate to the fact that the anniversary
of the half-a-century of the diplomatic relations between our two countries
falls during my Ambassadorship.
Excellencies, Guests and
The occasion provides an opportunity to capitalize once again the
quality of the relations between RI and DPRK and to highlight different aspects
in the relationship.
RI and DPRK have had a relationship starting before the two countries
agreed on the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1964. The friendship
that makes up the relations between RI and DPRK which has existed all along
still stands up until today along side with the evolution of differences in
histories and political systems that each of the two nations has over the last
That being said, the world has changed since then. The international
environment has become more complex and fast changing today. The international
system is no longer rigidly structured the way it was 50 years ago. Still, it
is my sincere wish that quality friendship can be continued and substance can
be further enhanced in the bilateral relations of our two countries.
Despite the challenges up front, the much potentials in bilateral
cooperation between RI and DPRK, especially in the economic field, education
and sports are there to be addressed. In trade relations for example, albeit
the two countries have gone through the 50-year diplomatic relations, the total
volume of bilateral trade reached to only a modest value of about 16.5 millions
US dollar in 2013. RI and DPRK should sit together and discuss on how to put
practical efforts to explore ways and means which would lead to the further
enhancement in bilateral relations in the way that would benefit the people of
our two countries.
Excellencies, Guests and
In conclusion, let me say that 50 years of diplomatic ties is a mile
stone in itself. For RI and DPRK, it does have a special significance. We - all
of us who are present here this evening at this Indonesia residence - bear
witness to it, the commemoration of the first half-a-century diplomatic
relations. With that, we look forward to seeing a more diverse and dynamic
relations between our two countries in the next second half to complete the
I would now invite you to raise your glass for a toast to mark the
occasion, while saying HAPPY ANNIVERSARY.
I would also like to invite you to raise your glass again for a toast
for the good health of Excellency Marsha' Kim Jong Un, for the good health of
Excellency President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and for the long lasting
friendship of our two countries.
