During the early years, the interests of the Republic of Indonesia in Western Australia was handled by an Honorary Consul. Mr. Don Manser was appointed by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia as the Honorary Consul from 1985 until 1993.
Considering the increase of economic and social interests of Indonesia, as well as the number of Indonesian residing in this region, based on the Decision Letter of the President of The Republic of Indonesia number 44 Year 1992, the Indonesian government officially opened the Indonesian Consulate in Perth on 20th August 1993. The main function of the Indonesian Consulate in Western Australia as stipulated at the Second Enclosure on the Decision of Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs number OT/SK.006/93/01 on 9th of January, 1993 Chapter I Paragraph 2, mentions that :
“The main duty of The Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia in Perth is representing the Republic of Indonesia in conducting the consular relationship with Western Australia, Cocos islands and Christmas island in economy, trade, transportation, social culture and science in accordance with the Indonesian government’s policy which is determined by the legal law.”
One year later, in 1994, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia appointed Mr. Harijono Soeprapto as the first Indonesian Consul in Perth. The office of the Indonesian Consulate is located at 134 Adelaide Terrace, East Perth, WA 6104.
During 1993-2008, Indonesian Consulate in Perth has led by the following Consuls :
- Harijono Soeprapto in 1994-1998
- Salomo Sinaga in 1998-2001
- Mukhlis Yunus in 2001-2004
- Dr. Aloysius L. Madja in 2005-2008
In December 2010, the Government of the Republic of Indonesia elevated the status of Indonesian Consulate in Perth to Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia. At the same time, the President of the Republic of Indonesia appointed Mr. E.D. Syarief Syamsuri as the first Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia to Western Australia.
