History of the Indonesian Embassy

1. The Embassy

The Indonesian Embassy to the Republic of France first opened in 1950, located at the Hotel Bristol, 112 rue du Faubourg St. Honoré, Paris 75008, while the office for Embassy's staff was located at Mont Fleuri Hotel, 21 Avenue de la Grande Armée, Paris 75016. The first Indonesian Ambassador,  Mr. Nazir Dt. Pamontjak, handed over his credentials to President Vincent Auriol on 5-May 1950 at the Elysée Palace. The ambassadors were assisted by several diplomats, including for Economic and Information Service.

After a few months at Hotel Bristol, the Embassy then moved to 90 Boulevard de la Tour-Maubourg, Paris 75007, then moved about two or three years later to 12 rue Dumont d'Urville Paris 75016. On August 25, 1954, the Indonesian Government bought a building on 49 rue Cortambert 75016 and a house on 154 Boulevard Bineau 154 Neuilly Sur-Seine, as Ambassador's Residence.

In the 1970s, the Indonesian Government closed some of its embassies abroad, which left the Indonesian Embassy in Paris to also cover for Spain, Portugal and Morocco until 1975. After the embassies in Madrid and Tunis were reopened, their accreditation were returned from Paris to the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid and in Tunis (for Morocco).

On 24 October 1986, the Indonesian Government purchased the building on 47 Rue Cortambert, 75116 Paris, which was later incorporated with the previously owned building on 47 rue Cortambert. After the renovation was completed, on 8 February 1988, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Muchtar Kusumaatmadja, and Ambassador Prof. Tb. Bachtiar Rivai inaugurated the Indonesian Embassy on 47-49 rue Cortambert 75116 Paris.
