08 August 2011, New Delhi – The ASEAN flag will be flown on a permanent basis for the first time in New Delhi today, 08 August 2011, in a ceremony at the High Commission of the Republic of Singapore. The ASEAN Flag hoisting ceremony commemorates ASEAN Day, as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded on 8 August 1967.
Leading the ceremony was H.E. Ms. KAREN TAN, High Commissioner, Republic of Singapore (Host and Acting Chair of the ASEAN New Delhi Committee), together with H.E. Dato PADUKA HAJI SIDEK ALI, High Commissioner, Brunei Darussalam, H.E. Ms. YOUS MAKANA, Ambassador, Kingdom of Cambodia, H.E. Mr. ANDI M. GHALIB, Ambassador, Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Mr. THONGPHANH SYACKHAPHOM, Ambassador, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, H.E. Dato’ TAN SENG SUNG, High Commissioner, Malaysia, H.E. Mr. ZIN YAW, Ambassador, Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Ms. Maria Agnes Cervantes, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Republic of the Philippines (on behalf of H.E. Mr. RONALD B. ALLAREY, Ambassador, Republic of the Philippines), Mr. Poldej Worachat, Minister, Kingdom of Thailand (on behalf of H.E. Mr. PISAN MANAWAPAT, Ambassador, Royal Kingdom of Thailand), and H.E. Mr. NGUYEN THANH TAN, Ambassador, Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Representing the Government of India as host country and ASEAN Dialogue Partner was Ms Renu Pal, Joint Secretary (MER-ASEAN Division) from the Ministry of External Affairs.
As mandated by the 18th ASEAN Summit on 7-8 May 2011 in Jakarta, the ASEAN Flag will be flown at the ASEAN National Secretariats of individual ASEAN Member States (AMS), AMS’ diplomatic and consular missions in AMS and Dialogue Partners including all Member States of the European Union and AMS’ missions where the United Nations Headquarters and offices are located.
