As one of 33 countries selected to support the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang, Oman held the 'Asian Games Fun Run' on 15 April 2018, from 4 pm to 6 pm. The run started at Qurum beach, along the Al Bahri road, passing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and concluded at the Royal Opera House; with a total distance of 2.5 km.
About 300 participants showed up for the event, most of them 5th and 6th grade students from different schools in Oman. The Indonesian community in Oman and family members of the Indonesian Embassy staff also took part, along with a number of Omani paralympic athletes. The first 30 contestants who crossed the finish line received special medals from the organizing committee.
The Minister for Sports Affairs of Oman, Sheikh Saad bin Mohammed bin Said al-Mardhouf al-Saadi, along with the Ambassador of Indonesia to Oman, H.E. Musthofa Taufik Abdul Latif, and a number of officials from the Oman Olympic Committee and the Olympic Committee of Asia greeted the runners at the finish line. Also present were representatives of the Indonesian Olympic Committee as well as the Indonesia Asian Games Organizing Committee (INASGOC).
Ambassador Musthofa was pleased to see the enthusiasm shown by participants at this event. "The promotional event to showcase Asian Games in Indonesia was received very well by the Omani public, as evidenced by the huge turnout, including the presence of some Omani athletes," he said. "Through sports, I'm convinced that relations between Indonesia and Oman will continue to flourish, including in the economic and political sectors," he added.
According to the Omani Sports Minister, the participation of so many students, children, athletes and paralympic athletes were proof that his country supported the success of 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. "By organizing this event, Oman seeks to activate the social sports programme while instilling the culture of sports exercise as a lifestyle within the society. I hope that through this activity, the 2018 Asian Games will garner more support from participating countries," said Sheikh Saad bin Mohammed.
One day before the Fun Run, a press conference was held by the OOC and the OCA at the OOC headquarter. The event was attended by Hussain Al Musallam, OCA Director General; Wissam Trkmani, OCA President Office; Syahrier Nawier, Indonesian Olympic Committee Executive; and Nur Laily Rahmawati, Deputy Director for International Relations & Protocol Department of INASGOC.
"This is a good opportunity for OOC to promote a healthy and modern lifestyle. We thanked the OCA and the INASGOC for choosing Muscat to host this important event," revealed Taha Al Kishry, OOC Secretary General, during the press conference.
Jakarta and Palembang will host the biggest sporting event in the continent, the 18th Asian Games, scheduled to be held from 18 August until 2 September this year.
