THE PRESIDENT OF REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA
ASEAN FAIR 2011 OPENING CEREMONY
BALI, 24 OKTOBER 2011
Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,
May Peace be upon us,
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen
It is a pleasure for me to be here, to officiate the launch of the ASEAN Fair today.
As the Chair of ASEAN this year, Indonesia came up with the idea of the ASEAN Fair, which would exhibit ASEAN cultural heritage and its creative products. The idea of the ASEAN Fair is in line with the vision of the ASEAN Charter of uniting the ASEAN Community, under One Vision, One Identity, and One Caring and Sharing Community.
After all, we can only promote our ASEAN identity by increasing understanding and appreciation of the differences and similarities in our history, cultural heritage and way of life. Culture is the universal language that binds countries together and nations together. Our shared cultural heritage and creativity leads to the arts, music and creative products that we share as part of the one caring and sharing ASEAN community.
The celebration that I call the ASEAN Fair, is also is a reflection of our resolve to make ASEAN People Centered.
Ladies and Gentlemen
There are two major objectives with the outreach to the people that we are doing with ASEAN Fair.
First, is the expo component – explaining the history, culture and way of life of ASEAN and its peoples, through multimedia, books, children’s’ paintings and cultural artifacts such as textiles and paintings.
Second, is to celebrate the richness of ASEAN creative industries, be it music, film, books, performing arts, handicrafts, painting, textiles and fashion items.
The one month celebration has been timed to coincide with the XIX ASEAN and VI East Asia Summit which will be held November 17-19 2011.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Finally, it is with great pleasure that I declare open the ASEAN Fair today, and hope that all of you here and out there, will join us for one month of celebration of ASEAN by the people of ASEAN for the people of ASEAN.
Let the show begin.
