Young Indonesian Athletes Compete at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games

Buenos Aires, 7 October 2018: The Indonesian badminton men's single and men's beach volleyball teams succeeded in advancing to the next round in the first day match of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games held on Sunday (7/10).

Rumbay Ikhsan Leonardo Imanuel, Indonesian representative in badminton men's single defeated Vietnamese men's single, Nguyen Hai Dang, in two straight sets with scores of 21-7 and 21-19. Ikhsan would subsequently face Chilean representative Medel Alonso on Monday (8/10) in the Tecnopark field.

Meanwhile the Men's Beach Volleyball team, represented by Akbar Bintang and Herlambang Danang, defeated the United States team with the score of 23-21 and 21-18.

Other sports that were followed by young Indonesian athletes on the first day were shooting (Muhammad Naufal Mahardika), 200m female swimming – medley (Azzhara Permatasari), and badminton women's single (Maharani Sekar Batari).

Naufal, who was only 17 years old, was ranked 14th in the world while Maharani had to surrender to Goh Jin Wei from Malaysia on the first day.

The 2018 Youth Olympic Games are held in several stadiums and city parks competing 32 sports and followed by young athletes from 224 teams.

Indonesia sends 17 athletes to 8 sports, namely badminton, shooting, swimming, weight lifting, 3x3 format basketball, beach volleyball, athletics and golf. 2018 YOG will run until October 18, 2018. (Source: Indonesian Embassy in Buenos Aires)​
