Community Empowerment, the Key of Environmental Preservation in Seribu Archipelago


Community participation and empowerment become the key to preserve the diversity and richness of biodiversity in Seribu Archipelago. It was stated on the Climate Change Resilience Study and Field Visit at Seribu Islands National Park in the arrangement of Institutional Strengthening of the Biodiversity Sector in ASEAN (ISB) Project which was started since 4th-7th of April 2017.

Seribu Archipelago National Park is the only water area in the world which is located at the Capital city of a country. It is no wonder that National Park of Seribu Archipelago has a quite strategic economic value. Exceedingly, National Park of Seribu Archipelago is recently suggested to be the ASEAN Heritage Park (AHP).

From this study, it is seen that an active society participation in Seribu Archipelago becomes one of the keys for the local economic sustainability and welfare. Society's participation was realized through mangroves planting, coral reefs rehabilitation and turtle preservation.

This study also sees the influence of gender in the effort of local environmental preservation. The number of community empowerment programs such as Guidance of Family welfare (PKK), also help to encourage women's and children's role in the effort to preserve the environment and improve the economy.

Institutional Strengthening of the Biodiversity Sector in ASEAN (ISB) Project is a cooperation between ASEAN Center for Biodiversity (ACB) and a Donor Agency from Germany (GIZ). This project puts its attention to the strengthening of biodiversity sector in ASEAN region. The representatives from ACB Philippines, GIZ Philippines, and Ministry of Environment and Forestry as well as Ministry of Foreign Affairs (c.q. Directorate of ASEAN Socio-Cultural Cooperation) present in this study.
