New York, USA: "ASEAN-UN cooperation should be able to lead ASEAN to always be part of the solution of global problems," said Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno LP Marsudi, at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting with the UN Secretary General and President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, United States, Saturday (23/9).
The Minister Marsudi appreciates ASEAN-UN cooperation which continues to increase from year to year. ASEAN-UN needs to fully implement what has been agreed and set forth in the ASEAN Action Plan of the ASEAN Comprehensive Declaration of 2016-2020. The action plan has been made very comprehensively as it covers the development of cooperation in the three pillars of ASEAN, namely the political pillar, economic pillar, and socio-cultural pillar.
In addition, the Foreign Minister RI also conveyed that the ecosystem of peace, security, and prosperity that ASEAN has managed to create, needs to be continuously strengthened. In this regard, there are two concrete proposals for ASEAN-UN cooperation, namely (i) the use of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR) to strengthen efforts to maintain peace and strengthen reconciliation, and (ii) strengthening of cooperation among ASEAN sectoral bodies with UN institutions, such as strengthening the role of the ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre) in Jakarta with the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance.
The cooperation is expected to assist ASEAN in better responding to various requests for humanitarian assistance both from ASEAN member countries and from outside the region better. Thus ASEAN will always be part of the solution of global problems.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres said that ASEAN has been a net peace contributor where ASEAN countries have been contributing around 4000 UN peacekeepers. Gutteres also stressed the need for strengthening ASEAN-UN cooperation in fostering a culture of prevention including increasing contributions in UN peacekeeping forces, cooperation on preventing violent extremism, handling migration issues, and addressing issues of international concern, such as the Korean Peninsula and the situation in Rakhine State.
Prior to the Meeting between the ASEAN Ministers and the UN Secretary-General and the President of the 72nd Session of UNGA, a meeting was held between senior officials of both sides discussing the progress of cooperation and further efforts that could be taken in implementing the ASEAN-UN Comprehensive Partnership Action Plan (2016-2020 ).
The AUMM meeting is an annual meeting between the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the President of the UN General Assembly and the UN Secretary-General which has been taking place since 2010. The meetings are used to evaluate the cooperation between ASEAN-UN and discuss solutions and joint efforts of various problems that occur both in ASEAN and outside the ASEAN region.
