Ambon Night 2018

Ambonese Cultural Extravaganza 2018 is held to celebrate

the 29th Anniversary of Sister Cities' Relationship

Darwinites are invited again to attend Ambon Night, a celebration of Ambonese Cultural Performances which will be held on Thursday, 2 August 2018 from 6pm at the Indonesian Consulate. Ambon Night is an annual event and organised by the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia and City of Darwin with the support of the City of Ambon.

“City of Darwin and Ambon enjoy a strong Sister City relationship since its inception in 1989.  The yearly celebration of Ambon Night is a great time to share food, culture and to wish participants in the Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race well in their travels.  We take the annual opportunity to celebrate the friendship between these two remarkable places", said the Lord Mayor of Darwin, the Hon Kon Vatskalis.

This year event is special because both cities celebrated 29th Anniversary of the proclamation of Sister City Cooperation on 21 July 2018. “City of Ambon Cultural Group will be part of this cultural extravaganza and will be ready to entertain people of Darwin and other guests", said Ambon Mayor, Richard Louhenapessy.

Mayor Richard also congratulated both people of Darwin and Ambon for the strong sisterhood and sincere thanks former mayors and lord mayors for keeping this cooperation alive.

“I would like to congratulate the people of Darwin and Ambon for the celebration of 29 years of the Sister Cities relationship. My appreciation goes to former Darwin Lord Mayors and my predecessors former Ambon mayors for maintaining this relationship. Today, we enjoy advance technology that has assisted our communication better but imagine 29 years ago with limited access technology both mayors at the time were able to form such a strong cooperation we experience nowadays", he stated.

The Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia in Darwin is pleased to acknowledge a significant event for both City of Ambon and City of Darwin and always supports the Indonesian cultural promotion in the Northern Territory.

The Indonesian Consul in Darwin, Dicky Soerjanatamihardja said the longstanding cooperation between Darwin and Ambon is a wonderful achievement and has set up a high-level example for other similar international collaborations especially between Indonesia and Australia.

“It is my truly honour to be part of this significant event, how both sister cities have remained strong for almost three decades. I am so pleased to learn that over the years, there are significant programs both cities have achieved to support each other", Consul Dicky said.

“Therefore, I would like to invite you all to attend this cultural celebration and to understand more about Indonesia's culture especially from the city of Ambon", he added.

Ambon Night is free community event which will commence from 6pm until 9pm. There will be traditional food for sale which will be provided by non-profitable Indonesian organisations. Visitors are encouraged to attend with their traditional outfits.
