II. BILATERAL RELATIONS (HUBUNGAN BILATERAL)

History Bilateral Relations (Sejarah singkat hubungan bilateral )

Political Relations and Cooperation

Bilateral relations between Indonesia and Thailand have been strengthened as the result of various approaches from leaders of both countries. The close relations could be observed through the frequent meetings and exchange of visits from leaders and high officials of both countries, namely bilateral meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono with PM Yingluck Shinawatra in the sidelines meeting of Bali Democracy Forum V, on 8 November 2012; the visit of PM Yingluck Shinawatra to Indonesia to attend the APEC Summit on 7 – 8 November 2013; the visit of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Thailand to attend World Economic Forum on East Asia (WEFEA) in 2012; bilateral meeting between President Joko Widodo with PM Prayut Chan-o-cha during the 60th Anniversary of  Asian-African Conference, on 23 April 2015 in Jakarta; and the recent visit of President Joko Widodo to Bangkok on 25 October 2017 to pay respects to the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX).

Economic, Trade and Commerce, and Investment Relations  (Kerjasama Ekonomi, Perdagangan dan Investasi )
The main umbrella of bilateral cooperation between the two countries is the Joint Commission forum established after the signing of the Indonesia-Thailand Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement in 1992. In the 6th meeting of the Joint Commission between Indonesia and Thailand which took place from 16-18 January 2008 in Petchaburi, Thailand several bilateral issues that will be developed by the two countries are: economic, trade, transportation, education and culture, investment, fisheries, tourism, energy, technical cooperation, and IMT-GT cooperation. At the previous Indonesia-Thailand Joint Commission (5th) meeting in Yogyakarta in 2003, it was agreed to change the name of The Joint Commission on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the Republic of Indonesia and the Kingdom of Thailand to The Joint Commission between the Republic of Indonesia and the Kingdom of Thailand.

Social Culture, Tourisme and Education Relations (Kerjasama Sosial Budaya, Pariwisata, dan Pendidikan )
Even between Indonesia and Thailand there is no cultural agreement that regulates socio-cultural relations, but the desire to improve relations with Thailand in this field is quite large. Areas that are often worked on in this cooperation include the fields of education, science, student affairs, arts, sports, religious, health, social environment, exchange visits / invitations figures and state officials, private and scouting, and Tourism

Other Cooperations

Bilateral relations and cooperation between two countries in the area of defense and security have been flourished. They are reflected in the high commitment of both countries to the regular exchange of visits of Chief of Army, joint-exercises, seminar and exchange of information, and student exchange for the senior level officials.

In addition, both countries have a mutual agreement on the cooperation to combat illegal drugs trafficking under MoU between the Office of the Narcotics Control Board of the Kingdom of Thailand and the National Narcotics Board of the Republic of Indonesia on the Cooperation in Controlling Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances, their Precursors and Chemicals, and Drug Abuse, between Badan Narkotika Nasional (BNN) of Indonesia and Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) Thailand.

In the area of intelligence service, the coordination and cooperation between Badan Intelijen Negara (BIN) of Indonesia and National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Thailand have been very close. Both agencies have maintained good relations and aimed towards closer cooperation
