JAKARTA BERLIN ART FESTIVAL 2014: BRINGING JAKARTA’S MULTICULTURALISM TO BERLIN

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

?Culture is one of the fundamental pillars of diplomacy and has even been used as a basis for Jakarta-Berlin Sister City CooperationCommemorating the 20th Anniversary of the S?ister City Cooperation, the Jakarta City Government Tourism and Culture Office in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Berlin held Jakarta Berlin Arts Festival (JBAF) 2014 on November 7 to 13 of 2014

 

JBAF consisted of various activities, including art performances, workshop, and culinary events at several locations in Berlin, including:


  1. Indonesian Food Festival at Melia Hotel Berlin, with Indonesian Masterchef  Vindex Tengker on 7-8 November 2014.
  2. Sandy Sandoro concert in Asphalt Club on November 8, 2014 and Jazzbrunch  at the Ellington Hotel  on November 9, 2014;
  3. Promotion Performance by Deny Malik Entertainment at Mall of Berlin on November 9, 2014;
  4. The Jakarta Nacht (Jakarta Night) in Theatre Am Kudamm, Berlin on 10 November 2014, f. Dance Workshop between Jakarta Arts Institute (IKJ) with Staatlichen Ballett und Schule für Artistic (State School of Ballet and Performing Arts);
  5. Closing Party at Felix Club with a fashion show of  Merdi Sihombing and Edward Hutabarat collections, and dance performance by the Jakarta Arts Institute and Female Disc Jockey Andina.

 

The highlight among series of events was the Jakarta Nacht, held  on Monday, November 10th, 2014. More than 700 spectators packed Theatre am Kudamm Berlin. Jakarta´s multiculturalism was reflected in repertoire arranged by Denny Malik. Elements of traditional dance and music from various regions in Indonesia, from Batavia to  North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Malay mixed into a riveting Edward Hutabarat`s  batik clothing and eco-friendly traditional Sumatra clothing by Merdi Sihombing also enrich the evening shades.

 

Jakarta Provincial Government and the Government of Berlin signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Sister City Cooperation on April 13th, 1994. In addition to culture, the sister city  cooperation also covers various fields including Urban Planning, City Public Transportation, Clean Water and Wastewater Treatment, Housing Development Planning, and Economics.

 

The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Ing. Fauzi Bowo, in his opening speech at the Jakarta Nacht, took the opportunity to congratulate both the Government of Jakarta Province and the Government of Berlin on the 20th Anniversary of the Sister City Cooperation. The Ambassador further said that JBAF activities will contribute positively in strengthening the friendship between the people of both cities, as well as increasing the people to people contact between Germany and Indonesia, which is one of the Jakarta Declaration agreement in 2012.
