On the sideline of the High Level Panel of Eminent Personalities of
the South, 7 - 9 May 2013, in Natadola, Fiji, Indonesia and Kiribati
signed the Joint Communiqué concerning the establishment of Bilateral
Relations between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the
Government of Republic of Kiribati on 8 May 2013.
The Joint Communiqué was signed by H.E. Mr. Wardana, Vice Minister
for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and H.E. Reteta Rimon,
Kiribati High Commissioner to Fiji.
At the signing ceremony, both the Indonesian Vice Minister for
Foreign Affairs and the Kiribati High Commissioner expressed the
interest of their respective governments to co-oporate closely in the
bilateral and multilateral fields to achieve mutual benefit. Furthemore,
they expressed the desire to furthe deepen the present level of
co-operation between the two countries in various areas.
Moreover, H.E. Mr. Wardana, Indonesia Vice Minister fo Foreign
Affairs paid a courtesy call to H.E. Mr. Anote Tong, President of the
Republic of Kiribati, the day before the signing of the Joint
Communiqué, to discuss the possibility of engaging in further cultural
exchange experiences and capacity building programs between the two
countries. The potentials areas discussed were fisheries, trade and
human resource development programs.
Indonesia also offered for Kiribati to participate in the
"International Training on Mareine Protected Areas Management Plainning
for Pacific Countries" that will be held in Tegal, Indonesia in June, to
which H.E. Mr. Anote Tong accepted the offer with much pleasure.
In addition, through the agreement, Indonesia also hopes to assist
Kiribati to make a significant contribution to improving and developing
their natural resources.
