On July 20, 2016, Indonesian Ambassador in Singapore, Ngurah Swajaya, and the Governor of Riau Islands, Nurdin Basirun, alongside staff members from both parties, conducted coordination meetings in Tanjung Pinang. The meeting was intended to identify the efforts made to increase opportunities for investment, trade and tourism as well as the discussion of strategic issues related to bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore.

As the foremost region to the Indonesia-Singapore border, Batam, Bintan, and Karimun areas of Riau Islands province are the most strategic areas in bilateral economic cooperation between the two countries. Both countries also have a Working Group on Batam, Bintan, Karimun as part of the strategy of economic cooperation.

The revitalization of Batam that has been conducted by central government along with local governments gives birth to the momentum to increase investment and tourism between the two countries through utilizing the complementarity of the two countries.

Over the past few years, statistics show that Singapore contributes the largest foreign investment in Riau Islands province. Since the beginning of the year until July 18, 2016, the approved value of Singapore investment and the number of pending investment projects in Riau Islands province respectively amount to US $ 3.6 million in 17 projects. In the tourism sector, Singapore contributes to the most foreign tourists traveling to Indonesia amounting to 1,519,430 tourists in 2015. Of these, 1,094,220 of them immigrated to Indonesia through Riau Islands province, especially Batam and Bintan.

Today, the bilateral relations and cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore continues to develop for the benefit of both countries. As a neighboring country with direct borders and intensive-yet-dynamic interaction, potential problems may arise which require coordinated measures to overcome. Therefore, it is important to maintain cooperation and coordination between the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Singapore and the Local Government of Riau Islands.

The coordinated meeting between Indonesian Embassy in Singapore and the government of Riau Islands is expected to identify the strategic issues that require attention, and the coordinated measures to overcome the problems.

In the midst of the meeting, the Ambassador symbolically handed over the insurance compensation amounting to a total of S $ 142,502.01 (one hundred and forty-two thousand five hundred and two Singapore dollars), equivalent to the amount of 1.38 billion Rupiah for wife / heirs of the deceased Cemmy Nico Tiwow, ship crew from Tanjung Balai Karimun, Riau Islands Province, who died at the age of 40 years due to illness while performing his duty as a sailor (Captain of Singapore's Tug Boat Company) on July 23, 2015 in National University Hospital, Singapore. The event was witnessed by the Governor of Riau Islands.

After the death of Cemmy Nico Tiwow, Indonesian Embassy in Singapore cooperated with the heirs, along with the Ministry of Manpower of Singapore and the company recruiting the deceased, for the disbursement of insurance which intended to compensate to the heirs of the deceased. In accordance with Singapore's legislation, the insurance disbursement was processed in approximately 1 (one) year.
