INDONESIA'S ASSISTANCE TO THE NATURAL DISASTER-AFFECTED ASEAN MEMBER COUNTRIES
Reflecting friendly bilateral ties and ASEAN solidarity, the Indonesian Government, Chair of ASEAN, on 24 October 2011 presented its assistance to the ASEAN countries affected by natural disasters.
In this regard, the Government of Indonesia is providing US$400,000 respectively for Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and the Philippines; US$500,000 for Viet Nam; and US$1,000,000 for Thailand.
The Government and People of Indonesia express their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and those currently affected by the natural disasters. The assistance provided is a treatment of solidarity amongst fellow members of a caring and sharing ASEAN Community.
Disasters such as these emphasize even more the importance of the implementation of the 2005 ASEAN Agreements on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER). With the planned signing of its agreement on 17 November 2011, the Government of Indonesia looks forward to the full operationalization of the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Center) which will enhance regional capacity to assist each other in managing the impacts of disasters.
The Indonesian Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare, H.E. Agung Laksono, handed over the assistance to the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia, H.E. Kan Pharidh; Ambassador Designate of the Philippines, Ms. Rosario Aguinaldo; Deputy Chief of Mission of Royal Thai Embassy, Mr. Vutti Vuttisant; Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Viet Nam, Mr. Ha Hong Hai; Deputy of Mission of the Embassy of Myanmar, Mr. Thaung Oo; and Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Lao PDR, Mr. Huangseng Khamdalavong. The ceremony was held in the office of the Coordinating Minister, at Jalan Merdeka Barat No. 3, Central Jakarta.
