Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Canada, Dienne H. Moehario convened a meeting with the Canada-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group (CIPFG) at the Parliament Hill of Canada, Ottawa, 28 November 2013. Ambassador Moehario took the opportunity to convey the latest developments on Indonesia-Canada relations including the Bilateral Consultative Forum, ASEAN-Canada as Dialogue Partners, the output of APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting 2013 and the 2014 General Election in Indonesia. CIPFG Co-Chairs, 1) The Honourable Deepak Obhrai, Member of Parliament (MP) from the Conservative Party and 2) Senator Victor Oh (Conservative Party) were present. The meeting was attended by CIPFG Members: 3) Senator Terry Mercer (Liberal Party), 4) Senator Suzanne Fortin Duplessis (Conservative Party), 5) Senator Salma Ataullahjan (Conservative Party), 6) Senator Asha Seth (Conservative Party), 7) Senator Thanh Hai Ngo (Conservative Party), 8 ) Senator Tobias C. Enverga Jr. (Conservative Party), 9) Senator David Smith (Liberal Party), 10) Senator Dennis Dawson (Liberal Party), 11) Senator Nancy Ruth (Conservative Party), 12) The Honourable Leon Benoit, MP (Conservative Party), 13) The Honourable Devinder Shory, MP (Conservative Party), 14) The Honourable Terrence Young, MP (Conservative Party) and 15) The Honourable Gary Schellenberger, MP (Conservative Party). CIPFG currently consists of 28 members. The meeting was attended by 2 (two) Co-Chairs and 13 (thirteen) members of CIPFG.

During the discussion, Ambassador Moehario conveyed various potential efforts to increase investment and trade cooperation, and to deepen Indonesia-Canada bilateral engagement through Bilateral Consultative Forum, which since 2013, lead by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Marty Natalegawa and Minister Foreign Affairs of Canada John Baird. Efforts to intensify regional and multilateral cooperation, such as cooperation between ASEAN and Canada as Dialogue Partners, cooperation in APEC and WTO were also discussed.

Ambassador Dienne and CIPFG focused as well on the mid-term development in Indonesia and the importance of international support to the victims of Haiyan Typhoon that struck the Philippines in November 2013.

Ambassador Moehario informed that Indonesia will hold General Election to vote Members of House of Representatives on 30 March – 6 April 2014, and the Presidential and Vice Presidential Election is scheduled September 2014.

CIPFG reiterated their intention to further develop bilateral, regional and international cooperation with the Indonesian Parliament, as specified by the Joint Declaration between the Indonesia-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Canada-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group, signed on 24 October 2012 by the Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Priyo Budi Santoso and Co-Chairs of CIPFG, at the sidelines of the 28th Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union in Quebec City, Canada.
