´´Venga, venga´´ (come, come), Patricia Harman, the chief of the office event, University Pontificia Catolica, shouted to invite students who have just finished their classes to come to the ASEAN Day program which was held at the auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering, 7 September. 

 

The stands of ASEAN, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand were visited by students who wanted to know more ASEAN and its member countries. They also looked enthusiastic when they watched cultural performances from each ASEAN member countries, such as the dance of Bulu Gila (the province of Maluku), the dance of Tabal Gempita (the province of Riau) from Indonesia, Thai-boxing show and the congklak game show from Malaysia. 

 

ASEAN Day was organized to celebrate the 44th anniversary of ASEAN and to introduce ASEAN to academicians and students. The event was held with the initiative from the Indonesian embassy, the Thai embassy and the Malaysian embassy.  

 

On the same day, a seminar about ASEAN was also held and opened by Ambassador Elard Escala, Director General of APEC, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The speakers of the seminar were Malaysian Chargé d´affaires, Bong Yuk Jiu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Perú and Bolivia, Yosef Berty Fernandez and Thai Ambassador to the United Nations, New York, Norachid Sinhaseni.

 

Each speaker presented different topics. Malaysian Chargé d´affaires presented the brief story of ASEAN, while Ambassador Yosef Berty Fernandez presented ASEAN Today. In addition, Ambassador Norachid Sinhaseni presented the cooperation between ASEAN and regional organization in South America.

 

On the evening, a cocktail in the Indonesian ambassador´s residence also was held. In this event, each ASEAN country served its signatory food, namely Chicken Satay (Indonesia), Pad Thai (Thailand) and herbal egg (Malaysia). The cocktail was attended by 100 guests such as businessmen, foreign ministry officials and diplomats.

 

ASEAN Day is the first ASEAN event organized in Lima. The event is useful to familiarize ASEAN and its member countries to Peruvians.

 

Although ASEAN is only represented by three embassies in Perú, the organization of ASEAN Day has shown the solidarity of ASEAN. The cooperation among the Indonesian embassy, the Malaysian embassy and the Thai embassy has given positive impression of the togetherness of ASEAN countries.
