The Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia and and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs collaboratively invite overseas students, including those of Hong Kong, to join a scholarship program “Darmasiswa RI” for the academic year 2011/2012.

This program offers the opportunity to learn Indonesian language and arts, which include music, dance, shadow puppet mastery. What is more, participants are encouraged to choose among 47 participating universities and colleges as their place of study. This will provide the participants not only the chance to study in Indonesia, but also the opportunity to actually live side by side with Indonesia people, to immediately learn the richness of Indonesian culture, and enjoy Indonesian magnificent and beautiful landscape.

The Darmasiswa RI Program was initiated for the first time in 1974 as part of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) projects, whereas at that time admitting only students from ASEAN state members. However, in 1976 this program was extended to invite students from other countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and USA. Since the early 90s, this program has been further extended and inviting students of all countries with which Indonesia has diplomatic relationship. Up to now, the number of participating countries to this program has reached to more than 75 countries.

The main purpose of the Darmasiswa RI program is to accommodate foreign students’ interest and enthusiasm to thoroughly learn Indonesian language and arts, as well as to foster cultural appreciation and build closer cultural links between Indonesian people and citizens of other countries.

The interest of international students participating in this program keeps increasing each year. For the academic year of 2010/2011 there are as many as 750 participants from 83 different countries and regions, including 4 students of Hong Kong origin. We believe there will be many more students from Hong Kong applying this scholarship program
for the academic year 2011/2012.
