The Government of Cuba has expressed its appreciation for the support of the ASEAN member countries with regard to the development of economy and finances of the country. It was acknowledged that Cuba has received great benefits from the collaboration with the ASEAN countries that has continued for more than 50 years.
“There are many spheres for ASEAN and Cuba to increase the economic relations that are of mutual benefit” the Acting Director for Asia and Oceania of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Relations said during the celebration of the 45th Anniversary of ASEAN (ASEAN Day) held at the residence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Cuba (8/8/2012).
For Cuba, ASEAN has a strong vision towards the process of regional economic integration. That is why, on the occasion of ASEAN Day, Cuba once again expressed its commitment to continue strengthening the collaboration with the ASEAN member countries.
Meanwhile, the Ambassador of Cambodia, representing his country as Head of ASEAN in 2012, referred to the situation of the ASEAN member nations that are most integrated at the moment, from a political as well as an economic point of view.
“The role of ASEAN is of increasing influence in the region of Asia. ASEAN has become a strategic partner for many countries and international organizations throughout the world” he stated.
He also referred to the economic development reached in the ASEAN. The GDP of the ASEAN has increased from 1.9 trillion USD (2010) to 2.2 trillion USD (2011).
Meanwhile total trade of ASEAN with the world has also registered an increase from 2 trillion USD (2010) to 2.4 trillion USD (2011)
As the Head of ASEAN in 2012, Cambodia will continue its maximum efforts to continue and speed up de creation of the ASEAN 2015 Community and to accelerate the process of ASEAN Connectivity.
The activity of ASEAN Day began with the hoisting of the ASEAN flag and the playing of the ASEAN Anthem, followed by a brief welcoming speech by the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia.
In his welcoming speech, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia offered a brief summary of the history and the aims of the creation of ASEAN, the role and performance in economic growth and development in different spheres, as well as in protecting safety and stability in the region.
The activity was attended by the Ambassadors and the staff of the Embassies of the ASEAN member nations accredited to Havana, namely Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
Also present was the Ambassador of Timor Leste and for Cuba, the Acting Director for Asia and Oceania of the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Cuba as well as several correspondents of the written and electronic press media.
In accordance with the agreement between the Ambassadors of the ASEAN member nations in Havana, as of August 8th 2012, the ASEAN Flag will be hoisted beside the national flag at the buildings of the Diplomatic Missions and the Residences of the Ambassadors of the ASEAN member nations in Havana.
The Ambassadors of the ASEAN nations and of Timor Leste accredited to Havana have until now held regular informal meetings, headed in an alternating manner every three months.
These informal meetings are held every month with the aim of in addition to exchanging information also to hold discussions with the participation of representatives of different sectors in Cuba. At the moment, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia is heading the ASEAN group in Havana for the period of July-September 2012.
