On 20 August 2013, as part of the 68th Anniversary of the Independence Day of Indonesia, the Indonesian Embassy in Hanoi held a diplomatic reception at Sheraton Hotel - Hanoi. Around 400 guests attended the reception including officials from Vietnam Ministries, organizations, journalists, businessmen, diplomatic corps in Hanoi, friends of Indonesia, and Indonesian nationals residing in Hanoi. The attendance of H.E Mr. Pham Binh Minh, Minister of the Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam as the guest of honor marked the significant role of Indonesia as an important partner to Vietnam and also reflected the closeness of the two countries’ partnership in line with the spirit of strategic partnership which was agreed by both countries’ presidents in June 2013.
In his speech, the Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam H.E Mr. Mayerfas stated that the closeness between Indonesia and Vietnam started since the time both countries struggled for independence against colonialism with the friendship of President Soekarno and President Ho Chi Minh to the current relationship we have today. President Truong Tan Sang’s visit to Indonesia recently has injected more energy into Indonesia and Vietnam bilateral relationship. Indonesia - Vietnam strategic partnership has shown not only a more matured ties but also laid out a new chapter and it has become the tasks of both governments to transform commitments into a more beneficial relationship to meet the expectation and increase the welfare of a combined population of 330 million people from both countries.
Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E Mr. Pham Binh Minh extended his congratulations to the Government and people of Indonesia and stated that Vietnam has always proud to have Indonesia as a neighbor and has always considered the people of Indonesia as brothers. This connection, as the Minister stated, stems from the similarities in history and culture of the two nations as well as the sincere sentiment and the asssistance of the Indonesian people. H.E Mr. Pham Binh Minh also acknowledged Indonesia’s economic development, political stability and its active role in the international forum. With the determination and joint efforts of the Leaders and people of our two countries, the Minister strongly believed that the traditional relations and strategic partnership between Viet Nam and Indonesia will be further consolidated and promoted, both bilaterally and multilaterally.
The Reception also highlighted Indonesian culture and cuisine. In addition to Indonesian food served at the reception and Indonesia ornaments laid out across the ballroom, three Vietnamese awardees of the Government of Indonesia’s scholarship performed Melati Putih and Sparkling Surabaya dances to the delight of guests.
Previously, on 17 August 2013, a ceremony commemorating Detik-Detik Proklamasi (independence proclamation) was held at the premise of the Indonesian Embassy, which was marked by the hoisting Indonesian national flag. Indonesian nationals in Hanoi and the Embassy’s staffs attended this important ceremony. After the ceremony, the Ambassador cut a slice of Nasi Tumpeng (a traditional stack-rice), as a thanksgiving practice by most of Indonesian people followed by lunch serving Indonesian food prepared by Dharma Wanita Persatuan KBRI Hanoi (Indonesian Women Association of the Embassy).
Also on the occasion of the Independence Day, a number of events were held during June - July 2013 including Blood Donation Day on 5 Jun 2013, badminton, table tennis competition, and gaplek (traditional game) on 6-7 July 2013.
