MOFA and Universities in Tanjungpinang Promotes ASEAN in Riau

Tanjungpinang: "We consider the importance of cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in encouraging the people of Kepulauan Riau Province to gain more benefits from ASEAN cooperation," said Rector of Raja Ali Haji Maritime University (UMRAH), Prof. Dr. Syafsir Akhlus, M.Sc., during  the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Directorate General of ASEAN Cooperation (Ditjen KSA), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with UMRAH on Cooperation in Education, Research/Scientific Study and Community Service at the UMRAH Campus, Tanjungpinang (15/6).

The Rector emphasized that in the perspective of ASEAN cooperation, Riau Islands Province is very strategic because it borders directly with Malaysia and Singapore. Therefore, the Riau has a natural laboratory that is rich in data, facts and events that are in direct contact with other ASEAN member countries.

In the event, the Directorate General for ASEAN Cooperation also signed a Memorandum of Understanding similar to the School of Social Sciences and Political Sciences (STISIPOL) Raja Haji. One of the scopes of cooperation in the Memorandum of Understanding is the establishment of the ASEAN Study Center (PSA) as an institution conducting research, consultations and publications, to promote ASEAN cooperation to a broad range of stakeholders. Chairman of STISIPOL Raja Haji, Endri Sanopaka, S.Sos., MPM stated that due to the specificity of the Riau Islands that directly borders on  other ASEAN member countries, the PSA in Tanjungpinang will be focused on the steps in addressing the various developments that exist on the border.

Referring to that specificity, the ASEAN Cooperation Secretary hopes that PSA UMRAH and PSA STISIPOL can contribute in promoting ASEAN in Riau Islands Province. Furthermore, Head of Study Program of International Relations of UMRAH, Sayed Fauzan Riyadi, S.Sos., I.Mas conveyed a  presentation which among others emphasized the standards that must be met by ASEAN member countries, as well as aspirations of UMRAH as a maritime university that must participate actively in implementing maritime diplomacy. Besides cooperating with the two universities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also visited the Editor of Tanjungpinang Pos to be able to reach more of the Riau Islands community.
