A Special Meeting between Indonesian Ambassador to Senegal and Khalifa General of Tivaouane Serigne Abdoul Aziz Sy Al Amine

On June 3, 2016, the Indonesian Ambassador to Senegal, H.E. Mr. Mansyur Pangeran, accompanied by Head of Information, Social and Cultural Affairs and Head of Economic Affairs of the Indonesian Embassy in Dakar had the honor to meet with Khalifa General Tivaouane, Serigne Abdoul Aziz Sy Al Amine, a prominent religious leader who was respected and admired by Muslims in Senegal. Khalifa General Tivaouane also a highly respected figure and had a great influence in political life in the country of Senegal.

For example, the national referendum of Senegal which was conducted in March 2016, President of Senegal, Macky Sall, personally asked for the support of the two most influential religious leaders in Senegal, Khalifa General Touba and Khalifa General Tivaouane, to invite millions of their followers to vote "yes" in the referendum on presidential term reduction in Senegal. In addition, President Macky Sall always do a special visit to Tivaouane annually in celebration of the Prophet Muhammad's Birthday.

In addition to welcoming the holy month of Ramadan, the Ambassador used the momentum of meeting with Khalifa General to meet with the business community in Tivaouane. The meeting with Khalifa General Tivaouane can be regarded as a very important agenda for the Embassy, as the meeting is the only way to meet and discuss directly with the business community in Tivaouane whom are largely a follower of Tijaniyya and part of a nuclear family of Khalifa General Serigne Abdoul Aziz.

The Ambassador and his staff are warmly greeted by Khalifa General. Son and daughter of the Khalifa and the whole family attended the meeting, followed by a luncheon by Khalifa General, and joint Friday prayers at the Largest mosque in Tivaouane.

During the meeting, KhalifaGeneral Tivaouane told to the Ambassador that he really knows Indonesia very well, especially regarding religious life in Indonesia, which has similarities with Senegal, the majority are followers of Islam. Khalifa General said that he is eager to make a visit to Indonesia and will bring together the business community in Tivaouane in his visit. Khalifa General hopes that if he can realize the visit, back in Senegal, He will tell to his followers things that he had learned about the lives of Muslims in Indonesia.

The Indonesian Ambassador welcomed the planned visit and said that to improve friendly relations between Indonesia and Senegal, there should be an exchange of visits between business community and religious leaders from both countries. The exchange of visits is also expected to increase the number of citizens from both countries to visit.

After the meeting, the Ambassador, accompanied by the business community in Tivaouane visited to "Al Amine Residences", a residential construction project initiated by Serigne Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Sy, one of the sons Khalifa General Serigne Abdoul Aziz. In the project, a total of 500 housing units planned to be built on a land area of 7250 Ha. The project is planned to resemble the concept of residence located in the city of Mecca and Madina. The project is intended as lodging facilities to accommodate the millions of people who make the pilgrimage to Tivaouane during the celebration of the Prophet's Birthday festival every year. Every year about 2 million people came to Tivaouane to make a pilgrimage, especially in the celebration of the Prophet's Birthday. They come not only from Senegal but also from Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Gambia, France and the US

Town of Tivaouane, Thies, Senegal (± 100 Km from the city of Dakar) is a holy city for the followers of Tariqah Tijaniyya (Tijanism), the most important Sufi brotherhoods in Senegal and have followers for 60% of the total Muslim population in Senegal. In addition to Tijaniyya, there are three (3) other Sufi brotherhoods in Senegal, namely mouride (28%), Qadiriyya (6%) and Layenes (6%).
