INDONESIAN DAY EVENT IN BAHIR DAR UNIVERISTY
The Indonesian Embassy in cooperation with Bahir Dar University organized “Indonesian Cultural Show” at the Bahird Dar University, Bahir Dar, (south region of Ethiopia, 555 km. From addis ababa) on Monday, October 3, 2011.
During the event, the Indonesian Ambassador to Ethiopia, H.E. Mr. Ramli Saud, gave a speech to the university’s staff and the students of university about Indonesia in general, the current state of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Ethiopia, and his vision on enhancing the relations towards advanced level of relations in the future.
The event was followed by Indonesian Cultural Show at the auditorium in the same campus. The event showcased some cultural performances such as traditional music (Angklung) originated from West Java Province, traditional dances (“Yapong” Dance from Sunda and “Rentak Besapih” Dance from Jambi) and cooking demonstration showing how to make one of the popular Indonesian dishes (pizza noodles). All of the shows were performed by the staffs of the Embassy, as well as the Indonesian Women Association in Addis Ababa-Ethiopia.
The event has attracted many local communities to come, where more than two thousand spectators were sought during the evening show. The event was also covered by local and national press.
The Ambassador told the press that this event is aimed at promoting Indonesia through culture that is believed to be one of the most effective tools for diplomacy. This is a second cultural event since the Ambassador arrived in Addis Ababa. In the near future, the Embassy also has plan to have similar programs in other regions in Ethiopia.
The Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Ramli Saud told the press that the event was quite a success, judging by the public interest shown in the event. The Ambassador also told the press that this event could strangthen and develop areas of cooperation between Indonesia and Ethiopia, particularly exploring the economic and social potentials.
