Economic and Human Rights Dialogues Enlivened the Indonesia-Canada Bilateral Consultative Forum

The Second Indonesia-Canada Bilateral Consultative Forum (FKB/BCF), which was held in conjunction with the Dialogues on Economy and Human Rights, has been conducted in Yogyakarta on 11-12 June 2012. This was the seventh Human Rights Dialogue. At the meeting both countries were exchangingtheir views and sharing their experiences in dealing with various issues, such as multilateral and regional human rights cooperation, minority rights, freedom of expression, indigenous people, and current developments in Papua.
"Canada recognizes Indonesia as one of its key partners in addressing human rights issues, both in the regional and international fora," said a press release issued by the Directorate General of the Americas and Europe, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Second Indonesia-Canada Bilateral Consultative Forum is considered as a new consultative mechanism between the two countries; this is also expected to strengthen the relationship between Indonesia and Canada that has been established for 60 years.
In this forum, both countries agreed to keep improving and maintaining the relations between the two countries, as well as doing their best to resolve some issues that are still pending, such as the negotiation on the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA), finalization of the MoUconcerning Capacity Building on Transnational Crime and the MoUconcerning Capacity Building on Counterterrorism.
The economic dialogue was attended by two delegations: the Indonesian delegation was led by HafilWidianto, the Deputy Assistant for Economic Cooperation and the Financing of American-Pacific Economy, while the Canadian delegation was led by Grant Manuge, Associate-Assistant Deputy Minister for the Developments of International Business and Asian Innovation, the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. This was the first economic dialogue ever conducted in this forum.
The economic dialogue discussed various issues, such as MP3EI, bilateral trades, cooperation in investment, the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA), and cooperation in various areas (forestry, workforce, agriculture, air transportation, and tourism).
Following the economic dialogue, the human rights dialogue was also attended by both parties: the Indonesian delegation was led by M. Anshor, the Director of Foreign Ministry’s Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, while the Canadian delegation was led by Lisa Rice Madan, Director of Southeast-Asian and Oceanian Affairs, the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
The Delegation of Indonesia also attended the Bilateral Consultative Forum on 12 June 2012. Indonesia was led by M. Wahid Supriyadi, the Acting Director General of the Americas and Europe, whereas the Canadian delegation was led by Grant Manuge.
The forum was held to strengthen bilateral relations between Indonesia and Canada. Among the meeting's agenda are a report on the results of economic and human rights dialogues and exchange of ideas in the areas of politics, economy,and socio-culture.
In regard to the commemorationof 60 years of diplomatic relation between Indonesia and Canada, the Indonesian Ambassador to Canada, DienneMoehario, announced the plans,which have been prepared by the Indonesian representatives in Canada (Indonesian Embassy in Ottawa, Indonesian Consulate General in Toronto, and Indonesian Consulate General Vancouver) concerning the organization of this important event.
